Music can heal the wounds that medicine cannot touch.”
– Debasish Mridha.
I love this quote as it emphasizes the unique and powerful healing potential of sound, extending beyond the physical realm to address physical, emotional and spiritual needs. As a physiotherapist with years of experience in musculoskeletal health, I’ve long been dedicated to helping people move and live without pain. My practice has always been rooted in evidence-based techniques—manual therapy, exercise prescription, and a deep understanding of human anatomy. Yet, I’ve come to realize that true healing is a holistic journey, encompassing not just the physical body, but the mind and spirit as well. This is what led me to incorporate sound bath healing, particularly with crystal singing bowls, into my professional toolkit.
You might be wondering,
“What does a sound bath have to do with physiotherapy?”
The answer lies in the profound connection between our nervous system, our stress response, and our perception of pain. For me, music and crystal singing bowls aren’t a replacement for traditional physiotherapy, but a powerful adjunct—a way to empower my clients and accelerate their healing process.
The Physiological Impact: From Chronic Pain to Reduced Cortisol
One of the most significant benefits I’ve witnessed is the impact on chronic pain. Chronic pain isn’t just a physical sensation; it’s a complex interplay of physical, psychological, and social factors. The nervous system becomes hypersensitive, and the brain’s “pain alarm” system goes into overdrive. This is where sound baths can be revolutionary.
The resonant frequencies of crystal singing bowls create a deeply meditative state. This state, often associated with alpha and theta brain waves, helps to down-regulate the sympathetic nervous system—our “fight or flight” response—and activate the parasympathetic nervous system—our “rest and digest” mode. In this state of deep relaxation, the body’s natural healing mechanisms are given a chance to operate without the constant barrage of stress signals.
I explain to my clients that sound waves themselves can also have a direct effect on the body. The vibrations can penetrate tissues, promoting a sense of deep relaxation and release.
While the research is still emerging, some studies suggest that these vibrations may help to reduce muscle tension and improve circulation, contributing to a reduction in perceived pain.
sound baths are a powerful tool for stress management.
We all know that chronic stress is detrimental to our health, leading to elevated levels of cortisol—the body’s primary stress hormone. High cortisol levels are linked to a host of health issues, including inflammation, weight gain, weakened immune function, and increased pain sensitivity. The deep relaxation induced by a sound bath has been shown to lower cortisol levels, creating a tangible, physiological shift towards a state of calm.
For me, this is a key part of the healing process. If we can manage stress and lower cortisol, we can create a better environment for the body to heal from injury and pain.
Beyond the Body: Stress Management and Longevity
But the benefits extend far beyond managing physical symptoms. Sound baths are an incredible tool for mental and emotional wellbeing. In our fast-paced world, many of us are perpetually “on,” juggling responsibilities and facing constant stimulation. This can lead to a state of chronic stress, anxiety, and a feeling of being disconnected from ourselves.
Sound baths offer a sanctuary—a space to simply be.
The complex harmonics and gentle vibrations of the bowls guide the mind away from daily worries, allowing for a profound sense of peace. This practice of “letting go” is a skill that can be cultivated and carried into daily life. It teaches us how to self-regulate, how to find moments of calm amidst the chaos, and how to better manage our emotional responses to stressors.
And this, I believe, is where the connection to longevity truly lies. A life lived with less chronic stress and anxiety is a life that is more likely to be healthy and vibrant. By regularly engaging in practices that promote deep relaxation, we are not only addressing our current symptoms, but we are also investing in our long-term health. We are building resilience, strengthening our ability to cope with life’s challenges, and fostering a deeper connection to our own wellbeing.
As a physiotherapist, my ultimate goal is to empower people to take control of their health.
The crystal singing bowls , meditative music and breath are not a magic cure, but a powerful guide—a tool that allows individuals to tap into their body’s innate ability to heal. It’s an honour to facilitate these sessions, to witness the transformation, and to help my clients not just manage their pain, but to find a deeper sense of peace and wellbeing, paving the way for a healthier and more fulfilling life.
See you on the mat,
